Starting Conversations
Would you take a few minutes to consider the questions below, and start a conversation with God!
God says, "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."
Jeremiah 33:2-3
Starting a Conversation with God
Prayer, talking to God, does not have to happen in any specific way or place. God just wants to hear what is on our hearts.
1. Do you ever talk to God? Most people believe there is a God, and many have talked to God (prayed) even if they are not religious.
2. What do you talk to God about? When you have talked to God, what was going on in your life that led you to pray?
3. Do you think that God hears you? Talking to God does not answer all of the questions in our lives. Prayer helps us to express what is on our hearts and to understand God's answers.
4. Does God ever talk to you? We may have felt comfort, or hope, or forgiveness inside of us. This is God talking to us.
God may also speak to our hearts about letting light in the dark places of our hearts - our fears, our pains and our failures. God wants to talk to us about our past, present and future.
Past - God wants to help us to let go of the pains of our past by teaching us about forgiveness - asking God to forgive us for the times we have hurt others, and asking God to help us forgive those who have hurt us.
Present - God wants to help us to have wisdom about our relationships, our finances and our life choices.
Future - God wants us to have conversations with us here on earth so that our earthly lives will be full of faith, hope and love. Our conversations with God can continue forever when our earthly life is over.
The Bible says, "God did this so that people would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us." Below is a sample prayer that could help begin a conversation with God.
“Dear God, thank you for caring about my life. I want to have conversations with you. Forgive me for the times I have hurt myself and others with my words or actions. Please help me to make wise decisions about my life. Help me to learn how to love other people the way that you love me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
